Located in the Kendrapara District, Bhitarkanika National Park is a famous wildlife hotspot of the state of Odisha that houses a vast and varied species of flora and fauna. The national park that is sprawling across 672 km² of mangrove swamp is situated on a delta formed by rivers namely Brahmani, Baitarani, and Dhamra. The famous national park is home to a multitude of mudhuts, creeks, backwaters, and estuaries. It is one such wildlife center that still maintains a geomorphic and ecological balance in nature.
Founded in 1998, the Bhitarkanika National Park is encircled by the Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary, both of which play a pivotal role in promoting eco-tourism in Odisha. Bhitarkanika National Park truly plays a vital role in promoting eco-tourism in Odisha.
Bhitarkanika national park houses various species of Mangrove spreads across its forest region, marshy lands, ceeks etc. Thespia, casuarinas & sundari and indigo bush grasses are some of the other variety of flora that flourishes in the premises of the national park. Moreover, Teak, Hair, Babul, Salaia, Bamboo, Zizphus, Palas and Kauriculata trees are also a part of the vegetation of the park.
The Bhitarkanika national park has played a very crucial role in protecting Saltwater Crocodile and White Crocodile. Indian Pythons, wild pigs, rhesus monkeys, water monitor lizards, black Ibis, darters, cobras, chitals etc. are the other species that are seen here.
